Forests

It was windy. Very windy. Wind Advisory! Pretty sure that means its blowing hard.

My ten year old looked out at our front lawn after the wind and said in sheer and utter excitement, “Mom, if we water these every day, our front yard will be a forest!”

He is so right.

Do I want a forest in my front yard?
“But how will we find the front door if we have a forest?” I asked him.

“One tree at a time,” he explained.

Sometimes the kid is too smart for his own good.

You got a forest in your life? You working your way out of it one tree at a time?

Me, too.

Do you know what that means? Me, neither.

I needed this one today. How are your goals coming along this year?

Goals and Dreams

I have this  dream of  owning  a kennel full of dogs- all being trained (quite well by yours truly) for service dog work.   Right now that is only a dream.  At this time in my life, it would be an unreachable goal.  One day, I want to make this dream come true.  But for now,  all I can do is hone my dog training skills and do some other things to work toward the achievement of turning this dream into a goal.

I'm a great skill-honing helper!

Some goals are long term.  That is the thing about goals.  Some can be done in a day “organize the closet!”   Some are short term “Potty train the two year old before he starts day care.”   Some are long term “Service dog training”.

We talked about Dreaming- think of what you want to do with your life.  Dream big – what do you want to have, do, be?   I hope you started a list.  Some things are just silly and won’t ever be goals – yesterday I played skateboarding on the WII and no matter how much fun it was and no matter how hard I laughed and enjoyed – I can’t be a professional skateboarder – but it was sure fun to think about for a minute while I smashed  into the fence….

she can teach me many things - skateboarding is Not her forte!

Once you have defined your dreams – define your obstacles.  I KNOW why I must wait to do the service dog training.  I KNOW, too, what must happen before I can.  I have defined this goal and am working toward it in bite sized bits.

If there are no obstacles to your goal – its not a goal.  Its a to-do list. And yeah, while you may have a feeling of contentment when you cross that last item off that to-do list, there is no great and grand excitement that you should feel when you think “Kennel full of dogs!!”

can we be service dogs??

So write down the obstacles you must overcome- what do you need to do before you reach this goal?   Do you need more school, more money, more experience – more what??

Now – develop a plan of action.  How will you overcome those obstacles?  What do you need to do by When?  That ‘when’ is a stickler.   A goal Has to have a deadline.   Without a deadline – its still a dream.  Reward yourself for each step.

Just like ‘sit, come and walk nicely on the leash’  goal setting and achieving success is a skill.  A skill to be learned and practiced.

I can pull a cart and do weave poles - but treat eating is my favorite skill!

Want to share a two week goal with me? What do you want to achieve by the end of the month? What are your obstacles and what steps will you take to get there?
